Onyx - 8

The playground felt too loud today. Kids were everywhere, running, shouting, laughing, but I didn't feel like joining them.

I slid onto the bench by myself, pulling out my notebook and sketching a guitar. It was the only thing that made sense.

I don't really belong here. Not like the other kids. They have normal families , one mum, one dad. Me? I have six dads.

And a mum who's a famous rockstar. Sometimes I feel like I'm living in a spotlight and a shadow all at once.

Then, out of nowhere, she was there. A girl with curious eyes, watching what I was drawing.

"That's a cool guitar. Are you in a band?" she asked.

I blinked. No one usually talks to me like that. Not like I'm interesting.

"I'm not. But my mum is. She's a singer."

Her eyes got wide, like she believed me.

"No way! Like on TV?"

"Yeah. She's kinda famous," I said. Then, almost without thinking, I added, "And I have more than one dad."

Her face lit up, surprised and kind. "More than one? Like... a lot?"

"Six. It's complicated."

She laughed. "Wow. That sounds like a rock band itself."

For the first time today, I smiled back.

Maybe, just maybe, I wasn't so alone.

Later, we sat side by side on the swings. The noise of the playground softened around us.

"I don't really fit in at school. Everyone thinks I'm weird," I confessed.

She shrugged, smiling. "Me too."

Maybe we could be weird together.

I hoped so.
